Cannabis in Veterinary Medicine: A Budding Topic in Animal Health
Although veterinarians do not yet have a legal pathway by which to authorize cannabis use for our patients, a growing number of pet families are interested in using cannabis to alleviate the suffering of their animals. This panel will explore the emerging area of veterinary cannabinoid medicine, new developments, and research, the importance of veterinary oversight and guidance to ensure patient safety, and what pet owners should be aware of when considering cannabis products.
1. Although veterinarians cannot authorize cannabis use for our patients, it is always important to engage your veterinarian in a discussion about cannabis use to ensure the health and safety of your pet.
2. The past year has seen an increase in clinical research focused on the therapeutic use of cannabinoids for animals – we will look at some of these studies.
3. With an abundance of products being marketed specifically for pet use and a new legal market of products intended for human use, we will look at what pet owners should be considering when choosing a product for their pet.
