Kirk Tousaw has been an advocate for cannabis and cannabis legalization for decades. After twenty years fighting in the courts, Kirk retired from law and is currently the CEO of Great Gardener Farms, a British Columbia, Canada based cannabis company. Kirk is also a consultant with Canopy Growth Corporation.
Kirk’s law firm, Tousaw Law Corporation, focused on cannabis-related issues including criminal defence, regulatory compliance and Charter-based strategic litigation. Kirk is a founding Board member of the Sensible BC Society, serves on the Board of Directors of NORML Canada and previously served on the Board of the Multi-Disciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies Canada and the BC Civil Liberties Association. These non-profits groups work tirelessly on critical law reform issues.
Kirk has written and spoken extensively on issues related to cannabis and other drug policy, privacy, religious freedom and criminal justice policy. He has consulted with Health Canada regularly on matters of cannabis law reform and has participated in various roundtables with the Cannabis Legalization Task Force and the cannabis policy secretariats of both the federal and BC provincial governments. In addition, Kirk has had the privilege of testifying several times before the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights of the House of Commons and also before the Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs.
In recognition of his work and advocacy on behalf of medical cannabis patients and providers, Kirk was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal / Médaille du jubilé de dia on January 24, 2013 by Canada at the nomination of the late Senator Pierre Claude Nolin, chair of the Senate of Canada’s Special Committee on Cannabis Policy.
Kirk is a father of four and husband of one. In his free time, Kirk enjoys reading and listening to the Grateful Dead.
