Michael Shumate, CPA (Texas), JD, LLM, is a Partner in MNP’s Taxation Services group in Toronto. Overseeing the firm’s U.S. corporate tax practice, Michael works with his team to provide his clients with in-depth expertise and analysis of U.S. tax matters from a Canadian perspective. With more than 30 years of diversified experience, Michael specializes in developing and implementing tax-advantaged structures for public, private and governmental enterprises.
Michael utilizes a solution-based approach to tax planning with a particular emphasis on creative and non-traditional approaches to resolve complex tax and business issues. Michael assists his clients with acquisitions of U.S.-based assets from a buyer or seller perspective. He also helps businesses structure their U.S. investments, from the sales and distribution capabilities of private companies to large investments in production facilities.
With his extensive background in law, Michael has successfully defended clients during federal, state and municipal audit assessments and has represented clients in various appeals hearings, resulting in substantial tax savings. Committed to his profession, Michael has spoken and published on a broad range of U.S. tax issues for various organizations, including the Canadian Tax Foundation.
Michael is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designated in Texas. He completed a Juris Doctor degree (JD) from the University of Louisville, Brandeis School of Law and a Master of Laws in Taxation (LLM) from Osgoode Hall Law School, York University. He is an Attorney at Law in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and a member of the American Bar Association and the Kentucky Bar Association. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree (BSc) in Accountancy from Western Kentucky University.
